Loving Your Locks: Tips On Caring For Your Hair Extensions

While many may dream of styling long hair in head-turning updos or soft beachy waves, the reality is that growing out hair can take a long time! Luckily, hair extensions offer a convenient way for anyone to enjoy long locks without waiting for their own hair to grow out. After getting your extensions put in, you'll need to do some specialized care to keep them looking their best. Read on for a few tips on how to care for your new hair extensions.

Wash Properly

Having hair extensions doesn't mean you need to forgo your usual shampooing habits. In fact, washing your hair regularly will help the extensions last longer and look healthier and less greasy. Wash with a normal amount of shampoo, about a quarter-sized dollop, and gently massage it into your scalp. Take care not to scrub too hard as this may displace some of your hair extensions, so just go easy and enjoy the relaxing feel of a luxurious shampoo session! Adding conditioner afterward will help keep your natural hair and your extensions feeling soft and supple. When drying your hair with a towel, try to avoid vigorously rubbing your scalp. Instead, gently soak up as much moisture as possible using the towel for the best results.

Use Heat Carefully

While using heat on your hair is not forbidden once you have hair extensions, you'll have to exercise a little caution to keep them in the best shape possible. If you like to blow dry your hair after taking a shower, try to wait until your hair has air-dried a little as this will make the drying process a lot more manageable. Using a low, warm setting blow-dry your locks downwards to ensure your hair dries evenly. Using a heat protectant beforehand will also help your extensions remain undamaged by any heat treatments. Simply spritz on a fair amount to your hair before blow-drying, using a flat iron, or curling your hair. Not only will your hair be guarded against harmful heat, but will also benefit from a lustrous shine!

Avoid Tangles

There's nothing worse than getting your hair extensions tangled up. With a few simple tips, your hair will remain tangle-free every day! One of the first steps to tangle-free hair is knowing how to properly brush. Regular brushing, as you will find out, is the number one way you can avoid tangled hair. When brushing, start from the bottom and gradually work your way up; this will guarantee that you are not pulling any knots down. If you notice any small tangles when brushing, gently use your comb to pick apart the tangle until it comes undone. When sleeping, try wrapping your hair in a soft cloth or braiding it to avoid nighttime tangles as well.
